Comprehensive Eye Exams
Regular eye exams are one of the most important steps you can take for your overall health. Select the option that fits to learn what to expect.
Why It Matters
Comprehensive Eye Exams Protect More Than Your Vision
An eye exam is one of the most important things you can do for your long-term health — and it involves far more than checking whether you need glasses. Many of the most common eye diseases, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts, develop slowly and show little or no symptoms in their early stages.

Canadians with no noticeable symptoms have an undiagnosed — and often preventable — eye condition. A regular exam is the most effective way to catch these conditions at their earliest, most treatable stage.
Beyond detecting eye disease early, regular exams let our optometrist monitor changes in your eye health over time and spot signs of systemic conditions — such as diabetes and high blood pressure — that often appear in the eyes before anywhere else. It is all too common for vision to already be affected by the time a patient seeks help; routine exams help make sure that doesn't happen to you.
What a Comprehensive Eye Exam Assesses
A thorough examination at Eye Story Optical takes approximately 45–60 minutes and covers both your vision and the health of your eyes. Many functional and health changes develop without you noticing — our optometrist makes sure they don't go undetected. Your exam assesses:
- Visual acuity — the clarity of your sight at near, intermediate, and distance ranges.
- Prescription check — an accurate, up-to-date prescription for your glasses or contact lenses.
- Binocular vision — how well your eyes align and work together as a team.
- Eye muscle function — the movement and coordination of the muscles that control your eyes.
- Peripheral vision — the full width of your field of view, beyond what is straight ahead.
- Pupil response — how your pupils react to light and adjust as you focus.
- Eye pressure — intraocular pressure measurement to screen for glaucoma.
- Front-of-eye health — an assessment of the cornea, eyelids, and anterior structures.
- Back-of-eye health — a thorough assessment of the retina, macula, and optic nerve.

How to Prepare for Your Visit
A little preparation helps your exam go smoothly — especially if this is your first visit to Eye Story Optical. When you come in, please bring:
- A list of your medications — including any prescription and over-the-counter medications you currently take.
- Your current eyewear and prescriptions — bring your glasses or contact lenses and any past prescriptions so we can track how your vision has changed.
- Your family eye-health history — be ready to discuss any family history of eye conditions or other relevant health issues.
- Your health card and insurance details — bring your Ontario health card and any extended health benefit information so we can confirm coverage and direct bill on your behalf.
Pupil Dilation & After Your Exam
To examine the back of your eye, your optometrist assesses the retina, macula, and optic nerve during your comprehensive exam. In some cases, dilation may be recommended to view these structures as thoroughly as possible. Dilating drops temporarily enlarge your pupils so important structures can be seen clearly.
If your eyes are dilated, you can expect light sensitivity and blurred vision — particularly up close — for roughly two to five hours. If this applies to your visit, we recommend the following:
- Bring sunglasses — your eyes will be more sensitive to bright light until the drops wear off.
- Arrange your transportation — driving may be unsafe while your vision is affected, so please plan another way home.
- Follow any prescribed treatment — if eye drops or medication are recommended, use them exactly as directed for the best results.
Third-Party & Medical Vision Assessments
Beyond routine eye care, we also provide vision testing and reports required by third parties — so you can complete licensing and employment requirements in one place.
- Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and Registrar of Motor Vehicles vision reports for driver's licences.
- Vision assessments for RCMP, police, and other employment or organizational applications.
- Completion of third-party forms and reports on request — bring a copy of the document you need filled out.
Please note that these third-party exams and reports are not covered by OHIP, and additional fees may apply. If you need a specific form or report completed, contact us at (416) 221-8833 with a copy of the required document and our team will be happy to help.
